The latest version of the Event 38 geotagging utility is now available for download. With this update, the utility has become even more intelligent in the way it handles large, complex missions with potentially missing information. In cases where the drone flies beyond telemetry link, the ground station’s telemetry log normally used to add geotags to images can be missing information for many of the images. This often means pulling the onboard logs directly from the autopilot, which can be a bit of a hassle at best or impossible depending on when the flight took place. The utility will skip tagging images for which there are no CAM messages available. We’ve found that missing a few tags here and there is no problem for most missions as long as you’re not looking to maintain a certain accuracy beyond usefulness for visual inspection. Even missing a relatively large number does not necessarily ruin a mosaic as long as the geotags available are spread evenly throughout the mission area. If you need a higher level of accuracy, we recommend using ground control points or interating PPK into your drone.
In the example image above, we missed a lot of geotags in the corner of the mission while the plane was very far from the ground station. Tagging these images 1:1 with the camera messages resulted in a large error as each misaligned tag built on the last. The new utility took care of it and the overall geotag error was just 4.2m.
